What Census Calls Us: A Historical Timeline

I found this site really interesting in the context of race and ethnicity because the creation of different ethnic groups and how race is a constantly evolving definition. The concept of ethnicity and race in Russia in and of itself is also really interesting; I took a class with Eren Tasar that was focused on Islam in Russia, and one of his main arguments was that Russia before the Napoelonic Wars was a state that more or less accepted its diversity–not in a gushy, feel good way, but more in that they had accepted different cultures and devised social structures to deal with it. I think the conceptualization of race and ethnicity is something that is deeply fascinating, and while this site primarily focuses on America, I think that it also provides the framework to look at race and ethnicity as an evolving concept instead of an immutable one.
