This image depicts a group of Kyrgyz men on horseback preparing to play a traditional game called Kok Beriu, also known as Kok Boru, which is a game that involves two teams on horseback trying to get a goat carcass into a goal, similar to polo. Kok Beriu was and remains a popular sport among Turkic peoples, as it developed out of the Turkic nomadic lifestyle that was prevalent before the conquest of Turkestan by Imperial Russia.

This image is important for looking at Imperial Russian Turkestan, because it shows the importance of traditions and and a sense of community within the communities of Turkestan that had been conquered by Imperial Russia. This photograph shows that the Kyrgyz and Turkic communities were kept together through the practice of traditional games, even when the groups themselves were subjected to foreign rule.
