The photographs I chose depicts a small community gathering at the Sheikhantaur Mosque for the annual festival and prayer of Ramadan. The architecture of the mosque contains some of the more common features found in Islamic architecture, most prominent being the quintessential “Qubba” or “Dome.” In the second photograph, several individuals are seen praying towards one of the outer walls, perhaps indicating the presence of a “mihrab” (the portion of wall indicating the direction of Mecca) somewhere in the general area. As for the location of the Mosque, the caption of the photo places it in Tashkent, or rather the current capital and largest city of Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan currently boasts a Muslim population of over 80% (entire population). Perhaps this high Muslim population is indicative of the lax interference on the side of the Russians in regards to religious conversions.
