‘Harvesting’

The image above shows the cover of Zritel’ from August 1905. It shows a group of people harvesting in Russian fields. Standing clear in the foreground is a man wearing a top hat and a white suit, this presumably is the landowner, the top hat and suit representing someone of higher status than the workers around. The image likely draws attention to the social inequalities across Russian society at this point, in this case in the agricultural sphere. It is interesting that the image draws attention to the lives of rural peasants, as the Revolution of 1905 is often represented as an urban movement, driven initially by worker unrest in the cities.
